Edge is a new motion and interaction design tool to create animated content using HTML5, Javascript and CSS3.

The reason for this preview release is to collect bug reports, feedback and new feature requests to be used for the final version that should be available sometime in 2012. While this version of Edge focuses on animations, Adobe is planning to incorporate many more features in next releases such as code editing, events handling and support for canvas and audio.

The preview version can be downloaded from the Adobe® Labs website using an Adobe ID (free to create).

Edge’s interface will look familiar to people that have been using other Adobe tools such as Flash, After Effect or even Premiere. In fact it uses a timeline panel and keyframes that allow the user to modify properties such as position, size and alpha over time for imported asset. This allows creating simple animations and outputting them as HTML, Javascript and CSS in a matter of few minutes.

Edge timeline panel

Edge properties panel

These are two examples of animations created using Edge: Getting jumpy version 1; Ferris wheel and roller coaster.
There is also a pdf with FAQ.
The below videos from the Adobe® TV website show Edge work flow involved in creating some simple animations.

One year ago I started thinking about creating a blog to share the knowledge I acquired while working in the digital advertisement industry. After the initial idea the concept was born, then came the design, HTML/CSS coding, WordPress integration, testing and a lot of changes and pauses in between.

As explained in the About page the aim of Changes Done is to share knowledge and techniques used for developing websites, banner ads, animations, games, applications and more, with particular attention (but not exclusive) to the Adobe® Flash® Platform.

I would like this to be a bidirectional process and I’d be happy if you leave comments with your ideas, solutions or contributions in the posts.

I am glad to welcome you and all readers to Changes Done.
